Call me Doctor Oakes or Roderick
I cover all aspects of Haematology, but particularly in the use of specialist tests for haematological cancers (as a member of the North of England Haematology Oncology Diagnostics Service, NEHODS) and the treatment of Myeloproliferative Disorders (as part of the specialist clinic team based in Newcastle).
I studied at the Medical School at Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1995 - 2001. My first medical posts were in Northumbria and I trained in Haematology in Newcastle, Sunderland, Bradford, Leeds, York and Hull. I started as a consultant in Carlisle in December 2011. I work three days a week (Monday to Wednesday) in Carlisle and two in Newcastle (Thursday and Friday).
I really enjoy the relationships we build with our patients. Many of our patients have conditions which require our input and review frequently over many years, so we get to know them very well. I am always amazed by the bravery, humour and kindness that people show. I also enjoy the contact with many different healthcare professionals, as advice and guidance are a major part of our work. Finally, I really enjoy the puzzle-solving challenges that making diagnoses pose.
Kindness. Kindness must be the irreducible soul of healthcare. It engenders respect, drives ambition and fosters collaboration. And, at the end of the day, kindness is what patients and their families remember.
