The Young Adult Diabetes Service 19 - 25 years

West Cumberland Hospital (WCH) & Cumberland Infirmary (CIC)

Welcome to the North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) young adult diabetes service.

This service has been especially designed to meet the needs of young people aged between 19 - 25years.

Many aspects of life change during this time. This means your diabetes care and management will adapt and change.

You will have already meet some of the adult diabetes team in the transition clinics. They will get to know you and your needs. We aim to help you gain confidence in managing your diabetes today and in the future.

Young adult clinics are held at:

WCH – Outpatients with Dr Idampitiya

CIC – The pillars building with Dr Fatima

Clinic appointments

You will continue to be offered appointments at the hospital with the diabetes team. How often will vary depending on your needs.

You will also be encouraged to have an appointment at least once a year at your GP practice for your “annual review”. This will include your diabetes checks and your general health.

Your “annual review” at GP will include:

  • Height, weight and Blood pressure
  • Urine sample. This is to check your kidney function.
  • HbA1c. This is at least once a year, but can be as often as every 3 months if needed.
  • Blood test. This will test your thyroid function, kidney function and cholesterol.
  • Foot screening.

Please continue to attend your retinal screening appointments.

When you turn 16, you will need to show an exemption (from payment) certificate when collecting your medications. Please see this link for further information:

Young adult service

The adult diabetes team will work with your GP and primary care team to make sure that you get the support you need. This is to help you manage your diabetes.

If you cannot make any of your appointments, please let us know as soon as possible.

If you need urgent support please ring the diabetes centre during working hours

Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.
