The facility will be used by patients from all over north, west and east Cumbria. Once complete it will be run by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as part of the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
The centre will have two floors and have a modern, relaxed feel. Vital new equipment will also be installed, including a new linear accelerator (LINAC) radiotherapy machine. Video conferencing technology is also being built into the plan, meaning that some patients could have consultations via a video link.
The building has been design by P+HS Architects, who have designed other cancer centres, including the award-winning Endeavour Unit at Middlesbrough's James Cook Hospital. Our staff have been closely involved in the design, working with the architects to create a layout that works for both staff and patients.
As the project progresses, we'll be inviting stakeholders, staff and patients to get involved in other elements of the plan, including the development of new artwork to help create tranquil environment.
There has also been investment in cancer services at West Cumberland Hospital, with the provision of newly refurbished chemotherapy and breast screening units.
