NCIC's Medical Education department has received exceptional feedback following a joint inspection and quality visit by NHS England’s Northern Foundation School and Newcastle University.
This follows a visit earlier this year from Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, which also resulted in excellent feedback.
The inspection took place earlier this month, and during the visit they spoke to a number of year one and two foundation level doctors, who were very positive about their experiences at NCIC.
Quotes from NHS England’s Northern Foundation School team (including senior leaders and a lay representative) about NCIC’s medical education environment included:
- “Stunning”
- “All come to fruition”
- “Singing praises”
- “The best inspection we have ever done in 10 years”
Newcastle University reported:
- "High quality teaching and assessments throughout”
- “No concerns what so ever”
- “Finances and accounting all very clear”
The Trust received commendations in every area reviewed, with no developmental actions identified. This is a significant achievement that reflects sustained investment in training, supervision and support for Foundation doctors across the organisation.
Professor Sam Dearman, Director of Medical Education, said:
"This feedback is a moment of real pride for NCIC. It recognises how hard our teams have worked over the last few years, and highlights that our support for trainee doctors is some of the best across the region. This is one of the strongest sets of results in the region, and I am immensely proud of everyone involved.”
Highlights from the visit included:
- High quality and capability within NCIC’s Medical Education teams
- Excellent clinical and educational supervision
- Strong access to teaching
- Rostering systems and exception reporting
- NCIC's Hospital at Night service
- Positive trainee experience, including strong recommendations from doctors in training
- TERS has clear had an unquestionable positive impact
