Hospital and community based research
Clinical teams undertake research studies with the support of the Research and Innovation team. These may take place at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.
In addition, clinical teams based in one or more of the community hospitals/clinics may run research studies and invite patients to participate. Examples of locations are Wigton, Workington, and Penrith community hospitals/clinics. In collaboration with the regional Clinical Research Network, our Research and Innovation team also supports health-related research in non-NHS settings such as schools, dental practices, care homes and local council services.
Different physicians and surgeons, along with nurses and/or other allied healthcare professionals, lead on the delivery of national ethics-approved research studies. The vast majority of studies and trials are collaborative efforts involving other NHS Trusts and world-renowned Universities and healthcare companies.
Primary care based research
The Research and Innovation team in North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS also supports research delivery in a number of GP practices. This relatively unique collaboration is an efficient and cost-effective way to offer patients the opportunity to take part in research studies. Dr Stacey Fisher (Research GP, General Medical Council no. 6078461) is the clinical lead for research delivery in our partner GP practices.
As in the other aforementioned settings, all research studies are ethics-approved. The current partners encompass more than 150,000 registered patients.
