Last week saw the grand opening of the new Macmillan Cancer Support Pod at West Cumberland Hospital. The pod will offer vital information and emotional support to anyone affected by cancer in the region.
Located in the refurbished reception area of the hospital’s old main entrance, the new hub is part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s ongoing commitment to improving access to cancer care and resources across Cumbria. The space has been freshly renovated with the help of the Estates team at WCH.
The pod will be staffed by a newly recruited team of trained Macmillan Support Volunteers, who bring diverse backgrounds and a shared passion for helping others. These volunteers will be available to offer guidance, lend a listening ear, and signpost visitors to further support services. They will also be supported by Specialist Health Professionals within the service with a clinical background in cancer services.
Tori Crotty, Macmillan Lead Cancer Information and Support Manager said:
“Our aim is to ensure that anyone affected by cancer has access to the right information and support throughout their journey. The new pod will be a safe and welcoming space where people can find comfort and support.”
The opening event brought together a host of people, from partner organisations, NCIC specialist Nurses as well as individuals affected by cancer. The green ribbon was cut by volunteer Barry, who said:
"I know only too well how you feel when given a cancer diagnosis. It's not something anyone should face alone, this pod will offer so much help and support to those who need it most. It really is fantastic!"
The team will be offering drop in sessions every Thursday from Thursday 18th September from 10am to 1pm. Anyone affected by cancer is encouraged to come along for a chat and a tea/coffee to be able to access any information and support that they require. Bookable one to one appointments are also available upon request Monday to Friday and can be made by emailing cancerinformation@ncic.nhs.uk or calling 01228 814283
