The School Aged Immunisation Service (SAIS), has successfully vaccinated 37,936 children against flu this season — reaching an impressive 60% uptake across Cumbria.

The SAIS team, who work for North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC), have exceeded the national target set by NHS England of 50–55% uptake, which means more protection for children and young people, and their wider community.

The small but dedicated SAIS team has worked tirelessly since September, visiting every school and education setting across Cumbria to deliver flu vaccines. Their efforts have continued despite challenges including severe weather, flu outbreaks, and high levels of pupil absence. In many cases, the team returned to schools two or three times to ensure children did not miss out, while also running additional catch-up clinics that will continue into the New Year.

Helen Mattinson, Clinical Lead for the School Aged Immunisation Service (SAIS), said:

“The whole team are passionate and proactive in meeting the needs of our communities and we are continuously identifying ways to move the service forward to adapt to the needs of our community.  The nurses work extremely hard to deliver the programme, however they could not do this without the hard work of our valuable business support staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I am very proud to be part of such a wonderful team.”

“The team have worked tenaciously, passionately, and always with a smile on their face to help protect the children and young people of Cumbria. Their commitment has ensured we not only met but exceeded expectations.

“The achievement comes at a critical time, as hospitals and communities across Cumbria are seeing higher numbers of flu cases this year, compared to last year. Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the spread of flu and protect vulnerable groups, including children, older people, and those with underlying health conditions.”
