Diagnosis and Screening

David was invited to attend a routine lung screening via a phone call from the screening team. David patient had a personal history of concern having lost his father to lung cancer at age 62 and had experienced a persistent cough for four years. Despite annual chest X-rays that consistently returned normal results, David decided to attend the screening, thinking, “Why not?”

This decision proved life-saving. The screening revealed two small nodules that were diagnosed as lung cancer. David said:

“This really opened my eyes as I thought I was clear… The screening programme is 100% important. Lung cancer is the hidden killer by the time you get symptoms, it’s a later stage.”

Personal Experience

Upon learning about the nodules, David remained calm, reassured by previous normal chest X-rays. A PET scan was scheduled, David acknowledged his risk factors, including past asbestos exposure and a 40-year smoking history.David Lung Cancer screening.jpg

When the diagnosis was confirmed, David met with Dr Lane for a detailed discussion about treatment options. Surgery was chosen immediately. Although David has hoped for a wedge resection due to its shorter recovery time, he underwent a lobectomy instead.

Surgery and Recovery

The surgery took place in Newcastle, David described the preparation as straightforward, he appreciated being able to ask questions and receive clarity.

Post-surgery, David spent one night in the high dependency unit and two nights in hospital overall. David explains his pain was well managed and a chest drain was placed immediately after surgery.

Support System

Support was offered through information booklets and direct contact with Rachel, the lung cancer specialist nurse, who provided details about available support groups.

Advice and Awareness

David strongly advocates for routine screenings and encourages anyone who is offered the chance to take part in the programme.

David said:

“If there is something that could save your life, why would you not accept it?”

A powerful message from the surgeon resonated deeply with David, he explains how the conversation had gone:

“The surgeon said to me, ‘If we were having this conversation in 2/3 years’ time when we found your lung cancer on your chest x-rays, we would not be sat here talking about cure.”

David now shares this insight with others, emphasising the importance of early detection and lifestyle choices.
