North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is highlighting some inspirational stories from their female workforce to celebrate international women’s day and to inspire others to join the NHS.

The eleven women featured in the mini campaign hail from a range of backgrounds and each have very different roles in the NHS. Each tell their own success stories detailing the struggles they have overcome, the people who have inspired them and the advice they would give to others. Each story is different and the Trust hopes that this series will help others (men and women) to consider a career in the NHS and particularly to inspire women.

Hannah Hinkley, a district nurse lead tells her story and explained why International Women’s day is important:Hannah Hinkley H&S.jpg

“It is important to me to make sure each generation knows what has been done in the past for women to be able to work and live the way we do.  What women have done in the past has enabled me to be able to raise my little girl and have a career at the same time.”

Rachel Jamieson, a community and ICC support manager added:rachel Jamieson cropped.png

“Personally I find international woman’s day important not only because it celebrates the successes of women but also highlights many inequalities women still face in this age. I think it can be a positive platform for sharing learning and empowering our voices.”

The women who have shared their stories include someone who changed her career path because she was made to feel like she was a woman in a ‘man’s world’, a woman who not only looks after patients but 200 sheep and a woman who was born in Uganda, studied in Span and Portugal and has been in the front line of COVID-19 in Carlisle’s intensive care unit. There is a women who would tell her how younger self beautiful and talented she was and to never start smoking and a woman who returned to nursing to help the covid response.

After each case study there is information about the jobs currently being advertised in the field the person works in and a link to all NHS jobs as well..

International Women’s Day has a number of missions that they want to lead the way gender equal world. They say that celebrating women's achievements and increasing visibility, while calling out inequality, is key.

We hope this series helps inspire people of all age, gender and background to celebrate all they can and have achieved.
