We’re excited to announce that work has officially started on a brand-new Gynaecology Department at West Cumberland Hospital, a major step forward in improving care for women in our community.

The £4 million pound investment will mean the Maternity Department and Women’s Outpatients can be separated for the first time. This important change is designed to protect the dignity and privacy of our patients, ensuring everyone receives care in the most appropriate and comfortable setting.

The new department will provide modern, purpose-built facilities to support high-quality care and enhance patient and staff experience. The new department will occupy an unused space in the hospital and will have outpatient and procedure rooms as well a dedicated ultrasound space.

Dr Rod Harpin, Collaborative Chair for Women and Children’s services at NCIC said:

“We’re pleased to announce that the work has now started on the new Gynaecology department at WCH. This is a commitment to improving the health, dignity and wellbeing of women across our community. The new department will allow us to deliver more modern, compassionate and timely care in a purpose-built environment. We hope these facilities, designed around their needs, will benefit women for years to come.”

The maternity outpatients area is also in the design stage; which will house the antenatal clinic, day assessment, obstetric scanning and the community midwives, on a newly refurbished ward. This work is being carried out with input from the maternity team and neonatal voices partnership. This work is due to start in the spring of 2026.

This new development is part of the wider redevelopment of the second phase of the West Cumberland Hospital, which was completed in 2024. The work is expected to be completed in autumn 2026.
