If you are taking iron tablets please stop taking these 7 days before your colonoscopy appointment.

If you are taking stool bulking agents (e.g. Fybogel, Regulan, Proctofibre), Loperamide (Imodium), Lomotil or Codeine Phosphate you need to stop taking these 3 days before your colonoscopy. 5 days before your colonoscopy please avoid eating bread which contains seeds i.e. granary bread.

We advise a low fibre diet if possible during this time. Low fibre foods include white meat, skinless chicken, grilled or poached fish. Cheese, eggs, tofu. White bread, pasta, rice, boiled or mashed potatoes. Rice Krispies and cornflakes.

The day before your colonoscopy

  • You may have a light breakfast eg. cornflakes and white toast.
  • After your breakfast you can only have clear fluids to drink until after your colonoscopy, no solid food is allowed.
  • Clear fluids are: Black tea/coffee (no milk), Water, Lemonade, Fruit juice without pulp, Cordial/squash (not blackcurrant), Clear soup, Oxo, Bovril.
  • If you take any oral medicine, do not take it within an hour either side of drinking your Moviprep jug as you may not absorb the oral medicine.

At 1pm you need to start your first litre of Moviprep

Jug and sachets

Step 1.Take one sealed plastic bag from the box.

  • Step 2. Add the contents of both sachets A and B to a jug that holds 1 Litre. Add water to make up 1 litre. Stir until powder has dissolved completely and the solution is clear or slightly cloudy.
  • Step 3. Drink one glass full of the Moviprep drink every 15-30 minutes. You should drink the litre jug over 1-2 hours.
  • As well as the Moviprep you should drink a further 500mls, at least, of clear fluids from the list with each of the litre jugs of Moviprep.
  • After you drink Moviprep you will have lots of watery bowel movements, so stay near to a toilet as you may need it urgently. You may experience some tummy cramps, this is the bowel preparation starting to work. If your bottom becomes sore you can use a barrier cream such as Vaseline or Sudocrem.
At 7pm

jug and sachets

Take the second plastic bag of sachets A and B from the box. Follow step 2 and 3 as before.

It is important to take in some sugar so that you do not feel dizzy from lack of food.  Added sugar to drinks or sugary drinks such as an isotonic sports drink e.g. Lucozade Sport will help.

You can continue to drink clear fluids up until 2 hours before your appointment, but remember no food until after the test. If you are not having sedation you can drink up to your appointment time.
