Key Information:

•            A medication you received today can interfere with some forms of contraception

•            This increases your risk of accidental pregnancy

•            Oral contraception (the pill, or mini pill), follow the missed pill advice

•            Implant, coil, injection, vaginal ring, or patch, use barrier contraception for 7 days

What is Sugammadex?

  • As part of an anaesthetic we sometimes need to give you a drug that relaxes your muscles
  • After the operation we have to reverse the effect of the drug so we can wake you up safely
  • Sugammadex is a drug that is used to reverse the effect of drugs that relax your muscles
  • A side effect of Sugammadex is that it can make hormonal contraception unreliable
  • This increases your risk of pregnancy following an operation for up to seven days

If you use oral contraception tablets

“The Pill” (Combined Oral Contraceptive)

“Mini-Pill” (Progesterone Only Contraceptive)

  • You should follow the “missed pill” advice on the pill’s information leaflet
  • Having Sugammadex has the same effect as one missed pill

If you use other hormonal contraception

Contraceptive implant

Intrauterine system (e.g. Mirena Coil)

Contraceptive injection (e.g. Depo-Provera)

Vaginal ring

Contraceptive patch

  • You should use a second method of contraception (e.g. Condom) for 7 days
  • Having Sugammadex can make your contraception unreliable for up to 7 days

If you use non-hormonal contraception

Copper coil

  • You do not need to take any action
  • Having Sugammadex does not increase your chance of pregnancy
