A podiatrist’s role is to assess, treat and minimise risk to patients at increased risk of ulceration or amputation of the foot.

Patients at a higher risk of complications may include those with certain conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Vascular conditions
  • Neurological conditions

These conditions can cause gradual changes to the feet so it is important to get regular foot health screening and assessment to reduce the risk of developing complications and early intervention is important if complications arise. The following risk factors will be assessed:

  • Loss of feeling in the feet
  • Reduced circulation to feet
  • Changes to foot shape
  • Dry skin
  • Hard skin
  • Corns
  • Fissures

The changes in the feet put patients at higher risk of developing ulceration or amputation, the role of podiatry is to manage the risk through early intervention, assessment, and treatment. This can be done by regular screening, assessing, and treating those at risk through:

  • Vascular assessment
  • Neurological assessment
  • Treatments of callus  and corns
  • Orthotics
  • Off-loading areas of high pressure
  • Promoting good foot health
  • Wound care
  • Nail care
