Visiting restrictions lifted at North Cumbria hospitals

Published: 7 January 2025

Visiting restrictions have now been lifted at Cumberland Infirmary, West Cumberland Hospital, and community hospitals in Cumbria.

In line with the national picture Cumbria has seen an increasing level of flu cases, and as a result visiting was temporarily restricted from Sunday (29th December) to today to help limit the outbreaks and keep people safe.

Thank you for your patience while this temporary measure was in place. We understand how important visiting can be for the welfare of our patients and their loved ones, and the restriction has been lifted was lifted as soon as it was felt it was safe to do so.

However, we know that winter bugs such as flu and norovirus are still circulating and urge people not to visit loved ones if you have any symptoms. These illnesses are more serious for those who are already in hospital, and also contributes to staff sickness. Please wait at least 48 hours after you stop showing symptoms before visiting patients in hospital.

If you do visit someone in hospital, it is strongly encouraged that you wear a mask. This is not only for the protection of our vulnerable patients, but also for our staff and yourself. Please also use the hand sanitiser stations on your way in and out.

You can also help stop the spread of flu by:

  • Using a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Washing your hands with soap and water
  • Disposing of your tissues in a bin
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces
