This service has been developed to meet the rehabilitation needs of adults who have suffered a brain injury. We are a specialist team working together to meet the needs of this group. This includes easing the changes from hospital to home.
The team
- Team Manager
- Neuropsychologist
- Case Manager
- Speech and Language Therapist
- Neuro-physiotherapist
- Occupational Therapist
- Rehabilitation Assistant
Everyone has specialist training in the management of problems relating to brain injury.
Client group
The main client group will be people with a new injury to the brain. This is usually from a serious head injury. Referrals may also be for people in the community who have suffered a head injury in the past. Input from the team may also be for people who continue to have specific problems relating to that injury.
The role of the team
When you are in hospital non-medical treatment like physiotherapy and occupational therapy will normally be provided by the hospital staff. The ABIS will be told about new patients and will:
- provide a comprehensive, integrated rehabilitation package for the needs of the individual
- make contact with the family or person most closely involved
- provide advice and support to hospital staff if needed
- keep in touch with the patient’s progress
- talk to hospital staff, the patient, family and other groups (e.g. Adult Social Care) about plans for leaving hospital
- advise on the need for more in-patient rehabilitation if needed
- develop plans for community based rehabilitation as required
Many people make a good recovery from brain injury and are able to return to their normal life. Others may need ongoing rehabilitation.
When a patient is sent home the team will:
- monitor progress
- give information and advice to the individual and their family
- talk to other community services like Adult Social Care, Education and anyone other groups who can offer support
- work with individuals and their families or carers to set goals and review progress.
For those who are referred to the service some time after a brain injury, an assessment of need will be made. This will be followed by:
- information and advice
- onward referral
- or a planned programme of intervention to address the problems identified
