The Aerobika is an oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) handheld device. Used with your breathing exercises it helps you clear mucus from your chest.

It is used to help clear chests by:

  • Keeping your airways open as you breath out
  • Providing vibrations in your lungs to loosen the mucus
Do not use the device if –
  • You have raised Intracranial pressure (ICP)- Increased pressure in your head
  • Unstable or very high Blood Pressure
  • Recent surgery or injury to your face or mouth or head
  • Have acute sinusitis, ear problems or a burst ear drum
  • You are coughing up blood or have air around you lung causing a collapsed lung  (Pneumothorax)

If you have any problems using the device or you are not sure if you should be  using it – please discuss with your Physiotherapist or GP.

Using your Aerobika:

A physiotherapist may decide on what level to set before your first use.

Set to _________ or try different settings until you find the one that works best for you.

  1. Start sat in a comfy upright position or other positions shown by your therapist.

    Position advised - __________________________________________________

2. Keep working through the cycle below _____________________or for up to 10 minutes. Or until your chest is clear.

3. Use your Aerobika _______________ times a day (even if you do not have mucus) to keep your chest clear. If you have a chest infection, you may need to do more.

Stop and rest if you feel lightheaded or dizzy during the session.

Daily cleaning of your Aerobika device

Cleaning your device properly is very important to reduce the risk of infection. Clean the device every night at bedtime. In the morning it will be clean, dry and ready for use.

  1. Take apart the Aerobika. Clean the following 4 parts (See picture on page 1):
  • the top case.
  • the bottom case.
  • the mouthpiece.
  • the valve cartridge

2. Soak the parts in lukewarm soapy water. A mixture of warm water & dishwashing liquid for 15 - 20 minutes.

3. Rinse in lukewarm tap water. Place the 4 parts on a clean towel or kitchen roll to air dry fully before putting the device back together. Do not rub it dry.

The Aerobika device is also dishwasher safe. Place it on the top shelf of your dishwasher. Put the 4 separate parts in a small basket to avoid them getting lost. Fully air dry all parts before putting it back together.

Weekly disinfection of your Aerobika

Always clean your Aerobika before disinfecting it.

Disinfect your Aerobika once a week using one of the methods below. If you have a chest infection, disinfect your device daily while infected.

  1. Boiling: Boil a pan of tap water and simmer the device for 5 – 15 minutes. Place the 4 parts on a clean towel or kitchen roll to air dry. Before putting it back together.

Or

2. Cold sterilising: Sterilise using Milton fluid or a Milton tablet following the instructions.

Replace your Aerobika device either every 12 months or if damaged. Contact your GP to prescribe a replacement Aerobika device.

The Aerobika device is single patient use only. Do not share your device with anyone else.
