If you have a long term lung condition such as COPD, Asthma, Bronchiectasis or Pulmonary Fibrosis you may find yourself more breathless, more tired and find it harder to do your everyday activities.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a programme designed to help improve your fitness, manage your breathlessness and teach you how to manage your condition. Most people who attend want to walk further and feel less breathless.

Assessment and treatment the respiratory team aims to:
  • Improve breathlessness
  • Improve overall strength and fitness
  • Improve feelings of wellbeing
  • Improve ability to carry out everyday activities
  • Help learn more about your condition and management
  • Increase confidence
  • Manage symptoms of your condition like cough and phlegm
  • Signposting and access to wider support agencies
  • Prevents hospital admissions and reduces GP consults
  • Reduce the amount of exacerbations you may have
  • Provide personalised care to your needs

You must be committed to the programmes to achieve maximum benefit by attending assessments/ classes or engaging with set home reviews within the programme.

Better Breathing Classes

These are the gold standard Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes held across North Cumbria. They involve an initial exercise assessment, a combination class and home based programme for a period of 7 weeks. Attendance is 2x week for sessions up to 1hr 30min each and a final completion assessment. Education is supported by handouts/ Sound Doctor online resources, education and discussion with staff.

Classes are held in locations across Carlisle, Penrith, Wigton, Workington & Whitehaven.

SPACE Manual

Space Manual is a paper based programme with telephone support over a period of 6 weeks for patients with COPD but is suitable for those with other respiratory conditions. This programme is designed to support individuals with COPD although the principals will benefit those with respiratory conditions. 

In this programme you will be encouraged to set goals and progress through a prescribed training and education programme aiming to achieve individualised targets. 

Exercises include a daily walking regime and 4 simple strength exercises. Each person works through the course at their own pace although aiming to complete in 6 weeks. Face to face assessments are completed pre and post course. 

Patients can be provided with personalised exercise advice, information and signposting if unable to meet demands of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation options
