Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy teams have revamped the pre-operative education classes for patients who are to undergo total hip and total knee replacement. This initiative is part of the wider Elective Surgical Hub Accreditation improvement work, aimed at enhancing patient care and surgical outcomes across our Trust.

Led by the dedicated Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams at WCH, the refreshed classes focus on pre-habilitation preparing patients both physically and mentally for their upcoming procedures. Research shows that when patients are well-informed and empowered before surgery, they experience:

  • Improved overall outcomes
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Fewer complications
  • A more positive experience throughout their surgical journey

While the classes are currently being delivered at West Cumberland Hospital, plans are already in motion to roll them out at the Cumberland Infirmary (CIC) in the near future.prehab.jpg

One patient said of the new class:  “It was a really useful session, lots of practical tips were shared and discussed. I now feel more prepared for surgery.”

Fiona Wright, Deputy Head of Physiotherapy said:

“This feedback reflects the value of the collaborative work being done by our teams and the positive impact it’s having on our patients.”

Patients will be automatically referred to the classes or if you would like to attend a class please call the department on 01946 523636 to arrange.
