We specialise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of liver conditions, including:
- Viral Infections - Hepatitis B and C
- Fatty liver disease – Now referred to as, Steatotic liver disease (SLD) / Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
- Cirrhosis and its complications
- Autoimmune liver disorders - For example
- Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC)
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
- Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH)
- Genetic liver diseases (e.g., hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease)
- Liver cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma
- Alcohol-related liver disease
If you’ve been referred to Hepatology as an outpatient we’ll invite you for an assessment with one of our clinicians. During the appointment we’ll discuss your medical history and the symptoms you're experiencing. We may also do a physical examination or tests such as:
- blood tests
- fibroscan (liver elastography)
Depending on your circumstances, we may also need to refer you to:
- Endoscopy Unit
- a CT scan
- an MRI scan
- an X-ray
- an Ultrasound scan
Once we’ve made our assessment, we’ll discuss your results and go through your options in detail. Together we’ll agree on the best option for you and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Treatment options may include:
- a change to your diet (12 week weigh management programme)
- exercise/activity advice
- advice and education on how to manage your condition
- new medication
- referral to surgeons
- follow up appointments to see how you’re getting on
- referral to a tertiary centre
- clinical research (see below)

Hepatology clinical research and surveillance studies:
- We’re involved in a number of important national and multinational clinical research liver studies and surveillance programmes covering many areas of liver medicine. Any involvement in clinical studies will not impact on your clinical care.
- These studies are often held in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and other world-leading organisations.
